Traditional Chinese Medicine: Tongue Imaging App

Researchers at the University of Missouri developed a machine learning algorithm for analyzing the color and coat of the tongue to determine a patient’s health. They also developed an image detection application that distinguishes the tongue from surrounding areas.  These two technologies allow an app to be developed where the user will take a picture of their tongue.  The system will identify the tongue, identify different colored pixels and provide an instant diagnosis of ailments. This allows for those not skilled in the art of Traditional Chinese Medicine to use one of its diagnostic methods in the form of a mobile application.

Traditional Chinese Medicine can be traced through archaeological excavations extending back millions of years, with the first written history occurring over 3,000 years ago. Today Traditional Chinese Medicine is practiced side-by-side with western medicine in Chinese hospitals and over 10,000 practitioners in the United States treat 1 million patients annually. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the tongue is the map of the body’s network of organs. Practitioners analyze the tongue’s color and coat on the different tongue zones to determine a patient’s ailments.
