Rotary Scanner for Nondestructive Imaging applications

Non-destructive imaging has applications in many different industries, particularly within the aerospace, civil engineering, and the medical industries, notably pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

Currently, most industries utilize a traditional Cartesian (x-y plane) scanners, but these scanners have limitations. In order to capture an image, Cartesian scanners must travel along rows and columns, slowing down and stopping to change direction. This greatly increases the amount of time needed to capture a complete image.

This technology seeks to provide a solution to slow imaging systems. A new scanner has been designed and developed that uses two-axis polar positioning rather than two-axis grid positioning. This rotational scanner follows the radius of the object to be scanned while simultaneously moving along the object’s axis to quickly render a complete image. The rotational scanner has been tested and is capable of scanning an area of 5 square meters in less than 10 minutes, while a Cartesian scanner would require several hours to render the same image. This new scanner is also equipped with custom software to ensure speedy data collection and data transfer.
