Osteomodulatory Hydrogels for the Treatment of Osteoporosis

The present invention consists of injectable hydrogels for the treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease associated with bone homeostasis dysregulation that consists of minimal new bone deposition and significant bone resorption leading to the formation of porous and weak bones characterized by low bone mass. The current gold standard treatment of osteoporosis involves the injection of a non-bioactive cement that has been shown to provide limited long-term benefits and may even play a role in the formation of compression fractures in the neighboring vertebrae. Preliminary data shows the ability of this technology to create ionic crosslinked hydrogels that promote bone growth and resorption without neighboring vertebrae fracturing. This technology, therefore, provides a new, better method of treatment.
