Optical Fiber Sensing Technology

This invention relates to a real-time monitoring of the overhead power line sagging using optical fiber sensing technology for distributed strain or shape sensing.

The distributed optical fiber sensing technology (DOFS) allows accurate measurement of temperature or strain at positions along the length of an optical fiber. The DOFS have attracted considerable interests in health monitoring of civil structures. In this invention, researchers claim to use DOFS technology for spatially-continuous sag monitoring of the powerlines in real time. The DOFS technologies in this invention for sag monitoring include Rayleigh scattering based optical frequency domain reflectometry, Brillouin optical time domain analyze, or Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer. Each of these technologies could provide real time shape information of a commercial optical fiber over several kilometers long.
