New Instrument for Small Incision Cataract Surgery

Researchers have developed a new surgical instrument to improve the standard of care in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS). Ophthalmologists use MSICS to remove cataracts from the eye when phacoemulsification is not feasible or safe. MSICS is effective but the relatively large incision is associated with post-operative astigmatism. To address this, a novel and cost-effective instrument has been designed to enable manual cataract fragmentation and removal through a very small incision. Unlike other devices, this instrument does not require multiple incisions or cross sectional cuts. Instead, the entire operation can occur through a single incision that is comparable in size and safety to phacoemulsification.
