Low-cost, Rapid, Accurate Assessment of Nutritional Status

A new device (measuring tape) to accurately assess the nutritional status of an infant, child, or adolescent who may be underweight, overweight or obese has been developed.

In children, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) has been endorsed as a more sensitive marker of malnutrition than weight-for-height. MUAC offers the added advantage of permitting screening in settings where resource requirements necessitate low-tech, portable devices that are simple to use, require minimal training and can be applied regardless of the age or health status of the individual or their ability to stand, sit or walk. Traditional MUAC assessments rely either on 1) a measuring tape intended to be applied with companion reference materials or 2) a singular color coded tape that uses a singular threshold value to classify nutritional status irrespective of age. *Innovation:* A new device (measuring tape) to accurately assess the nutritional status of an infant, child, or adolescent who may be underweight, overweight or obese has been developed. The device is designed to simultaneously display the patient’s MUAC and corresponding MUAC z-score based on the child’s age without the need for further calculation or interpretation from reference charts or tables. By applying distinct thresholds at each age, providers can evaluate trends occurring in the same child over time and more reliably track changes in response to medical and/or nutritional interventions.

APPLICATIONS:
-Low-cost, rapid, accurate method for assessing nutritional status
-Z-score is indicated directly on the tape, eliminating the need to refer to separate charts
-Can identify malnutrition contributing to underweight and overweight/obesity
-Can be tailored for use with defined population(s)
-Can be used in remote situations where weight scales and stadiometers are rare
-Can also be produced in the form of an electronic tape measurement
