Improved Apparatus as a Diagnostic For Precancer Screening

Researchers at Missouri S&T have designed an instrument and developed a corresponding method called P-scan. It is to be used to screen oncopterin and other 6 pteridines bio-markers in urine samples for pre-cancer screening. The level of the oncopterin bio-marker in the urine sample will be used to determine whether a human subject is going to develop a cancer (basically answer the question "yes" or "no" for a human subject to develop a cancer), and the other 6 pteridines will be used for fingerprinting. In essence, the first part results in a “yes” or “no” response to whether or not a cancer will develop in the subject, and the second part is used to determine what types of cancers that the person could develop.

BENEFITS:

  • Non-invasive
  • Sensitive
  • Fast
  • Simple
  • Cost-effective
  • Adaptable for routine screening in a clinical laboratory
